A Disciplina, also known as a whip, flagrum or scourge, is an ancient instrument of penance and spiritual discipline.  Aligning ourselves in prayer with the suffering of our Lord is one of the aspects of penitence and penitential prayer.  Connecting thus with His suffering, we join in His great work of atonement in our own simple way.  Taking the Disciplina can help with such prayer, and this is why our ash-handled whip shows the symbol of Christ’s suffering.  This Disciplina whip features three whipped and hardened falls, representing the time between the death of Our Lord on the Cross and His Resurrection.
