“Black Death’: This seven-fall Disciplina sports a black cotton grip for extra smooth handling. Each fall has three knots, representing the time between the death of Our Lord on the Cross and His Resurrection.
The ‘Black Death’ Standard Size Seven-Fall Disciplina (Standard Size = 1/4″ cordage) has a long black cotton grip and seven extra long falls, each with three knots. Together they add up to a total of 26” in length. If you are looking for something heftier that also features three knots per fall, consider our Five Sorrowful Mystery Jumbo Disciplina.
A Disciplina, also known as a whip, flagrum or scourge, is an ancient instrument of penance and spiritual discipline. Here at Cords of Penance, we make our Disciplinas of sisal rope, by hand and with care. Our whips are tried and tested with over 10,000 strokes and hold strong. They do the job very well without much ado.
Sisal Disciplinas are impact whips that do not break the skin easily, although bruising may happen, depending mostly on vigor and frequency of use. Whips like ours are intended to add an edge to meditation and fervency to prayer, rather than draw blood. Customers have repeatedly confirmed that our sisal Disciplinas lie well in the hand and are easy to use with satisfying results, making them the perfect tool for meditative penitential spiritual practices.
The rope we work with – be it cotton, sisal or hemp – is natural, biodegradable, unoiled and untreated. It is exceptionally durable and retains both knots and twist very well. New hemp and sisal are somewhat stiff but soften quickly with use. You need neither oil, wax, nor otherwise condition your ‘Black Death’ Disciplina.
We package discreetly so you can buy with confidence!
