Aligning ourselves in prayer with the suffering of our Lord is one of the aspects of penitence and penitential prayer.  Connecting thus with His suffering, we join in His great work of atonement in our own simple way.  Taking the discipline can help with such prayer, and this is why our ash-handled whip shows the symbol of Christ’s suffering.  This discipline whip features three whipped and hardened falls, representing the time between the death of Our Lord on the Cross and His Resurrection.

A discipline whip, also known as a flagrum or scourge, is an ancient instrument of penance and spiritual discipline. Here at Cords of Penance, we make our disciplines of sisal rope, by hand and with care.  Our whips are tried and tested, and found to do the job very well without much ado.

This ash-handled whip was fashioned from natural materials and combines functionality with simple grace.  The smooth, attractive handle, simple by design with its cross symbol and a matte finish, lies well in the hand for easy use and balanced action. It measures 8″ in length and 1 3/8″ in diameter.  The three jumbo-size falls are made from 3/8″ sisal and measure 22″ on average in length. Each fall end is securely whipped and hardened, thus packing a definite punch with more of a sting and less of a thump. The intensity of the effect achieved with any whip or flogger will be best established by the owner.

Our Discipline design has been extensively tested with over 10,000 strokes and holds strong.  Sisal disciplines are impact whips that do not break the skin easily, although bruising may happen, depending mostly on vigor and frequency of use.  Whips like ours are intended to add an edge to meditation and fervency to prayer, rather than draw blood.  Customers have repeatedly confirmed that our sisal disciplines lie well in the hand and are easy to use with satisfying results, making them the perfect tool for meditative penitential spiritual practices.

The sisal rope we work with is a natural, biodegradable, unoiled and untreated product.  It is exceptionally durable and retains its twist very well.  New sisal is somewhat stiff but softens quickly with use; only the hardened whipped ends on this discipline will not soften along with the sisal.  You need neither oil, wax, nor otherwise condition your Ash Handle Discipline Whip.
